About Hives/Urticaria

Hives are a common skin condition characterized by raised, itchy, and often red or pale welts that appear on the surface of the skin. Hives can vary in size and shape and may be round or irregularly shaped. They can appear suddenly and typically last for a few hours to a few days before fading away. Hives are usually a result of an allergic reaction, often triggered by allergens such as certain foods, medications, insect bites, or environmental factors.

In some cases, hives can also be caused by non-allergic factors like stress, infections, or autoimmune disorders. The itching and discomfort associated with hives can be bothersome, but they are generally not considered a serious medical condition. For mild cases, over-the-counter antihistamines can be used to relieve itching and reduce the appearance of hives. Avoiding triggers is important to prevent recurrence. In more severe or persistent cases, an allergist may prescribe stronger antihistamines or other medications to manage symptoms. Identifying and addressing the underlying cause of hives, whether it is an allergen or an underlying condition, is crucial for effective management and prevention of future outbreaks.
