About Food Allergies

Food allergies occur when the immune system reacts abnormally to specific proteins found in certain foods. When an individual with a food allergy consumes the allergenic food, their immune system identifies the proteins as harmful and releases chemicals, such as histamines, to defend against them. This immune response can lead to a range of symptoms, varying from mild to severe, including hives, itching, swelling of the lips or throat, difficulty breathing, abdominal pain, vomiting, or even anaphylaxis, a potentially life-threatening reaction.

Food allergies can develop at any age, but they are most common in childhood and often persist throughout life. Some of the most common food allergens include peanuts, tree nuts, milk, eggs, soy, wheat, fish, and shellfish. Strict avoidance of the allergenic food is the primary approach to managing food allergies. Label reading, awareness of cross-contamination risks, and careful dining practices are essential for preventing accidental exposure. Individuals with food allergies may also carry epinephrine auto-injectors for emergency use. Consultation with an allergist or immunologist is crucial for accurate diagnosis, creating a personalized management plan, and providing education and support to effectively navigate the challenges of living with food allergies.
